Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia and Creative Workplaces Stand Against Islamophobia in Australia’s Arts and Creative Sector

Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia and Creative Workplaces have come together to mark the International Day to Combat Islamophobia (15 March) and share a clear message that hate and discrimination have no place in Australia’s arts and cultural sector.

Like all forms of discrimination, harassment and hate, Islamophobia undermines respectful and inclusive workplaces.

Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Aftab Malik said “Islamophobia remains a pervasive and often underreported form of discrimination in Australia. Islamophobia impacts Muslim Australians in public spaces, workplaces and online, with Muslim women being targeted more frequently than men.

The creative sector is uniquely positioned to drive unity and compassion. Through creative expression and storytelling, we build connections and deepen shared understandings. A thriving creative sector is one where diversity is embraced and we stand together against harm and exclusion.”

Muslim creatives work across a broad range of artforms and contribute sophisticated perspectives that enrich Australia’s artistic landscape. Their work is an integral part of Australia’s cultural identity.

Creative Workplaces’ role is to promote fair, safe and inclusive workplaces in the creative industries. Kate Jenkins, Chair of the Creative Workplaces Council said “Everyone should benefit from the equal protections of their human rights. People work and create at their best when they feel respected, safe, and able to bring their full identities to work.

On this day, we recognise and celebrate the rich contributions of Muslim creatives to Australian cultural life. Creative Workplaces is committed to fostering a sector grounded in dignity, fairness, respect and belonging for all.”

Creative Workplaces and Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia call on the sector to continue championing creativity that reflects the diversity of Australian life. When artists from all backgrounds are supported to create, share their stories, and lead, the arts become a powerful force for connection, understanding and collective pride in our cultural richness.
