Australia's Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia
On 30 September 2024, the Australian Government announced the appointment of Mr Aftab Malik as Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia in Australia.
As Special Envoy, Mr Malik will listen to and engage with Muslim Australians, the wider Australian community and all levels of government on the most effective way to combat the growing problem of Islamophobia.
Mr Malik has been appointed for a 3-year term from 14 October 2024. See the Special Envoy's Terms of Reference and Aftab Malik's inaugural speech.
While Mr Malik is tasked with advising government on ways to combat Islamophobia, his office – the Office of the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia (OSECI) – and his statements, are independent of government.
Report Islamophobia – a campaign by OSECI
In partnership with national Islamophobia registers combating Islamophobia in Australia, we encourage victims and witnesses to report incidents, so policymakers and institutions understand the issue’s scope and impact.
How to report
Report to one of the five national organisations in Australia:
Islamophobia can happen anywhere at work, online, while shopping, in the places we feel safe.
It's a form of discrimination and prejudice against Muslims and people perceived to be Muslim that will continue to cause harm if left unchecked.
Its effects are universal, ongoing and increasing.
When we call it out, when we report it, we make space for systemic change.
Reporting gives organisations, institutions, and the entire community the power and the backing to create a future where acts of Islamophobia can be properly addressed.
We make the problem visible and that visibility is the first step towards legal support, advocacy
and direct action.
Making the report starts the process that leads to lasting, measurable outcomes.
If we all act, we will make an impact.
