Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia Aftab Malik has called for calm following an online threat against the largest Muslim youth organisation in Australia.

The threat, made against the United Muslims of Australia (UMA) on their official Tik Tok account referenced the 2019 Christchurch attacks which resulted in the deaths of 51 innocent Muslims and appear to be from the same user who directed threats towards Lakemba Mosque worshippers this week.

“This spate of recent terror threats referencing the Christchurch massacre is no laughing matter. It has put the Australian Muslim community on edge during Ramadan, the holiest time of the year for Muslims.”

“Words have consequences, and those are fear and panic,” Mr Malik said.

“As a society, we need to condemn this hatred and ensure that we are creating a nation where these sorts of attitudes and comments are completely unacceptable.

“I urge the NSW Police to investigate this incident thoroughly and find the perpetrators of this hate crime.”

“We are Australians. No one should have to live under the constant threat of a Christchurch-type terror attack.”

Mr Malik will shortly be providing recommendations to the Australian Government on how to combat Islamophobia.

“I will urge the federal Government to take immediate action to address Islamophobia,” Mr Malik said.

“That includes taking decisive measures to ensure the safety of Muslims, their places of worship and institutions, and to take a whole-of-government approach to tackle Islamophobia.”
