San Diego Mosque Shooting
Since stepping into the role of Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, I have consistently warned — through public statements, private meetings with government officials, and Senate Estimates hearings — that the rhetoric directed against Muslim communities is dangerous and carries real-life consequences.
When political discourse normalises hostility, singles out communities, and fuels suspicion and fear, it escalates the threat level against Muslim communities and creates conditions for tragedies like the one we witnessed in Christchurch in 2019 and again today in San Diego.
Inciting hate against any community should never be dismissed as harmless rhetoric. Words matter. Public narratives matter. They shape attitudes, embolden extremists, and leave ordinary families living in fear.
In the first two weeks after the Bondi terror attack, Islamophobic incidents surged by 740%. Incidents targeting Muslims have increasingly involved violence, including:
- The thwarted mass terror plot in Perth, that included the targeting of mosques
- A man who allegedly threatened worshippers at a Brisbane Mosque with an AK-47 he claimed to have in his car
- The increasing number of letters and messages sent to Sydney mosques with murderous intent
- Muslim women being chased and allegedly threatened to be killed in Adelaide
- An imam and his wife allegedly being forcefully driven off the road, abused, and assaulted in Melbourne
Across the country, Muslim communities are feeling anxious and vulnerable. No parent should fear sending their child to school, and no child should fear for the safety of a parent attending a mosque. Every Australian deserves to feel safe, respected, and protected regardless of their faith.
The Australian Government must urgently respond to my recommendations to combat Islamophobia. We cannot wait for a Christchurch-style attack in Australia to act. The response must be serious and demonstrate a strong commitment – in terms of resources, architecture, legislative protection, and ongoing support.
Our prayers are with the victims, family and loved ones of the lives murderously brought to an abrupt end at the Islamic Centre of San Diego, California.
