Launch of the OSECI Papers Series at the University of Melbourne

The Office of the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia (OSECI) launched the inaugural paper in the new OSECI Papers Series, an initiative established by Australia's Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Aftab Malik, to foster evidence-based discussion on social cohesion, belonging, inclusion and contemporary challenges affecting Australia's multicultural society.

Launched at the University of Melbourne in partnership with the Australian Multicultural Foundation (AMF), the OSECI Papers Series will provide a platform for rigorous research, informed public dialogue and practical policy recommendations on issues that shape social cohesion and community relations across Australia.

The first publication in the series, How Can the Healing Begin? Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism & Social Cohesion after Bondi, examines the impacts of the Bondi terrorist attack on Australian society, including the rise in anti-Muslim prejudice, the consequences of social division and misinformation, and the broader implications for social cohesion and national belonging. The paper also explores pathways towards greater understanding, resilience, and peacebuilding between communities.

Developed as part of Special Envoy's commitment to fostering dialogue, strengthening community relations and addressing the drivers of hatred and exclusion, the OSECI Papers Series will bring together perspectives from researchers, policymakers, community leaders and practitioners to advance constructive solutions to complex social challenges.

The launch at the University of Melbourne reflects a shared commitment to scholarship, public engagement and informed debate at a time when strengthening social cohesion has become an increasingly important national priority.

Through future publications, the OSECI Papers Series will continue to contribute to conversations on multiculturalism, community resilience, interfaith relations, and strategies to counter racism, discrimination, and social exclusion.
